Community Outreach Interns
Andrew completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto majoring in international relations and minoring in French and history. During his undergrad Andrew worked for INDePth Conference, focussing on critical approaches to South Asian studies, and for the South Asia and Middle East Forum (UK), working on the Syrian refugee crisis. He specializes in American foreign policy and the history of international relations. Next year he will be pursuing an MPhil in international relations at the University of Oxford
Apefa Adjivon is a second-year student completing a double major in Diaspora and Transnational Studies and Peace, Conflict, and Justice. She is involved in several organizations on campus, including being Vice President of the UofT Trek for Teens club, Vice President of Finance for the Panhellenic Council, and Equity co-chair for Victoria Universities Students Administrative Council. Recently, she served as a Youth Delegate at the Youth Assembly at the United Nations working towards Sustainable Development Goal #5: Gender Equality. At the UN she was a winner of the Social Venture Challenge and was awarded a Resolution Project Fellowship for her social venture the Pearl Project; a center for girls in low-income communities with the purpose of pairing girls with mentors and skill-based opportunities to help them achieve their goals. She represented UofT at Parliament as a participant of the Women in House program and was invited back to present the Pearl Project at Parliament by the UN and the British Council.
Tate is going into her Fourth year at University of Toronto pursuing a double major in Economics and International Relations with a minor in Statistics. After growing up living on 4 continents, in 7 countries, Tate is especially keen to explore international development. The intersections of the R2P principle and development are especially interesting, as development and personal safety go hand in hand. While taking the TRN250 course Tate was able to explore one of the shocking events that prompted the of principle R2P, the 1971 Bangladesh Genocide, engaging in a study about a country where she spent 4 years. Tate is involved in Model United Nations and is keen to engage in lively discussions regarding international events and politics. She hopes to gain more experience with the principle of R2P and involve a new generation in positive, impactful international relations through her internship with the CCR2P
Nadim is a third year student specializing in International Relations, and minoring in Political science and Middle Eastern studies, He is also a graduate of the Trinity One International Relations program. Nadim is interested in several fields related to international relations specifically conflict resolution and transitional justice. He has worked with several local and regional NGO’s, including the International Center for Transitional Justice, as well as Oxfam whereby his work was focused on women’s access to justice in the Middle East this summer.

Andrea is going into second year and is planning to major in Neuroscience and International Relations, with a minor in History. Research for her Vic One Pearson Class cultivated an interest in R2P, particularly its strength in changing international behaviour from conflict resolution to conflict prevention. This year, Andrea had the pleasure to be involved with NAMUN, the Attache, psychology and immunology research labs and is intent on finding meaningful intersections between the sciences and social sciences.Andrea’s other CCR2P involvements include serving as an assistant editor for the “R2P” dispatch journal, and one of the organizers for the CCR2P Canada 150 Debate; she is excited to continue her work with CCR2P this summer as a Research and Policy Intern!
Engin Polar is a second year Turkish-American student at the University of Toronto. Engin completed the International Relations Stream of the Margaret MacMillan Trinity One Program and has previously been a Compliance Analyst for the G20 Research Group and a Research Analyst for the Canadian Centre for Responsibility to Protect. His research interests include armed conflict, state-building in the Middle East, counter-terrorism, and international law. After he completes his undergraduate degree, he plans on attending law school.
Sameen Zehra graduated this year from the University of Toronto, Trinity College with a major in Peace, Conflict and Justice, and double minor in Political Science and Contemporary Asian studies. She is particularly interested in conflict resolution, global governance and policy responses to challenges related to international security and human rights concerns. She was previously an intern at the U.S. Consulate Toronto, President of the University of Toronto Refugee Alliance and Lead Editor on South Asia for Synergy: The Journal of Contemporary Asian Studies.
Angela is a second year student pursuing a double major in International Relations and Ethics, Society, and Law. Sonida is in her Third year at the University of Toronto pursuing a major in International Relations and minors in German and Spanish. Apart from the languages she studies at UofT, she is fluent in Albanian and Greek. Her interest in IR and specifically in the R2P principle is focused on the role of global agents in the protection of human rights during crises. This stems from her having been raised in Albania during a time of social unrest, when the country was transitioning from a dictatorship to a democracy, and also from her having witnessed the humanitarian crisis caused by the Kosovo war at a young age. In addition to her internship with CCR2P, Sonida is employed at a law firm and her work includes helping refugees around the world.
Agnes is going into her fourth year studying International Relations and Ethics, Society and Law. She is interested in the relationships between R2P and states with little normative power, and the BRICS perspective of R2P. Agnes is excited to join CCR2P as a summer intern, and looks forward to contributing to the database through her fluency in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
Esmé is going into her Third Year as a student at Trinity College of the University of Toronto, pursuing a major in International Relations and a double minor in Political Science and French Literature. Having graduated from the Trinity One Margaret MacMillian program in the International Relations stream, Esmé is interested in international human rights and security in which R2P plays a major role. Having grown up in Paris, and now living in Toronto, Esmé is fully bilingual in French and English and is particularly interested in the dynamics between Europe and the rest of the world. Esmé has been delighted to help expand CCR2P high school chapters in Canada and throughout the world as a Community Outreach Officer throughout the year and will continue to do so over the summer.
