We have research branches across different universities in Canada, and divisions within the University of Toronto. RECRUITMENT CALL FROM THE CCR2P

The Canadian Centre for the Responsibility to Protect is currently recruiting for the following positions and welcomes applications from qualified candidates. Based at the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto, the CCR2P is Canada’s leading research and advocacy organization on the Responsibility to Protect principle. (www.ccr2p.org)

 

ELIGIBILITY:

·  Any undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at the University of Toronto with a minimum 3.5 CGPA or recent alumni from any major universities;

·  A demonstrated passion and interest for the study and advocacy of R2P principle;

·  Able to commit to September 2017-April 2018 (inclusive)

·  Previous involvement in the CCR2P’s research or advocacy divisions will be an asset. We welcome applications from candidates with language skills and background in IR/Peace & Conflict/political science/history/public policy/law.

Canada is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. As we reflect upon the past, present and future of Canada’s commitment to global humanitarianism, what is your assessment of the relevance of R2P in Canadian foreign policy in the 21st century?”

PLEASE NOTE: Successful candidates may be interviewed in late September to mid October. All applications will be considered on a rolling basis but only the successful candidates will be contacted. A mandatory training session will take place after the application deadline at the Munk School of Global Affairs.

 

Available positions:

 

Entry Level Positions (For which the writing sample is optional): 

1.         Research Analysts

- Reporting to the Co-Directors of Undergraduate research, selected research analysts will be undertaking a comprehensive meta-analysis of R2P’s political and normative evolution since the 2005 World Summit Outcome through a country-specific approach. Language skills are valued, as well as previous involvement in the G8/G20 Research Group, the Attaché Journal of International Relations, and any other IR-related research centres.

 

2.        Curriculum Development officer:

- Curriculum Development officers are tasked with assisting in the development of our online interactive curriculum on R2P. In particular, they will write up concise, direct, and easy-to-follow explanations of various aspects of R2P -- along with corresponding multiple choice questions that help test and develop comprehension. Excellent research and writing skills are highly valued.

 

3.         Translation Officer:

- Translations Officers are tasked with translating the curriculum and other resources we develop into French. Successful candidates must be fully bilingual in both French and English. Passion for genocide prevention education is highly valued.

 

4.         Event and Logistics Officer:

- Event and Logistics Officers are tasked with planning and executing the CCR2P's annual Youth Summit, along with various other events. Excellent organizational and logistical skills are highly valued.  

 

5.         Youth Outreach Officer:

- Youth Outreach officers are tasked with assisting in the maintenance and expansion of the CCR2P's youth network, along with assisting Youth Ambassadors and High School chapters in fulfilling their mandates. Excellent communication and organization skills are highly valued.

 

6.         Event Photographer:

 - The Event Photographer is tasked with taking photographs at the various events that the Centre organizes. Applicants are required to submit a portfolio and/or description of previous photography experience as applicable. 

 

Senior Level & Board Positions: (For which the writing sample is Required)

 

1.         Director of R2P Scholars Network

- Reporting to the Managing Director of Research, the Director of the R2P Scholar's Network will expand CCR2P’s R2P Scholars Network by identifying key academics and practitioners in the field of R2P. An advanced understanding of the R2P scholarship is required for this position and exceptional organizational skills and communication skills will be valued.

 

2.         Deputy Director of Media & Communications

- Reporting to the Director of Communications, The Deputy Director of Communication is responsible for all internal communications at CCR2P. Other duties include producing an annual communication strategy for the Centre’s activities and coordinating all graphic materials for promotional purpose. Familiarity with Adobe graphic programs and Squarespace in addition to a background in graphic design will be valued.  Superb command of English and French is required for this position.

 

3.         Co-Editors of R2PLive.org (2 positions)

- The Co-Editors of R2Plive.org are responsible for maintaining the quality of online posts made by the R2PLive analysts, to ensure that all of the articles featured on the R2Plive.org remain consistent with the operating mandates of the Centre. This position requires proficiency in Wordpress and any other relevant computer-related skills. Language skills (beyond English and French) will be valued, as well as previous involvement with the R2Plive database.Specific responsibilities include: Assisting with the training the R2Plive analysts at the Fall Orientation Session on the use of Factiva & Wordpress mechanisms; Monitoring and editing the works of R2PLive analysts as needed throughout the year; Working closely with R2PLive analysts to maintain quality control;   Producing a quarterly report on the key trends and issues found on R2Plive; Assisting in the developing of an archive of R2P-related literature and past posts to serve as an online bibliography for the CCR2P and the wider R2P community; Coordinating closely with the Director of Undergraduate Research to disseminate the R2PLive's findings; and ensuring up-to-date maintenance of the R2PLive database at all times.

 

4.         Director of Research & Publications

- The Director of Research & Publications will oversee all aspects of research conducted by CCR2P’s research divisions across Canada. This is a Board position and requires a serious commitment to editorial excellence as well as familiarity with the existing body of R2P scholarship. Previous experience with CCR2P or other like-minded organizations will be valued. Fluency in French is an asset but not strictly a requirement. Superb command of English is required, as well as excellent teamwork and time management skills.

 

5.         Associate Directors of Outreach (2 positions) 

- Associate Directors of Outreach will be responsible for one of the three main initiatives of the CCR2P Outreach and Youth Education program: (1) Building an online interactive curriculum on R2P (2) Planning our Youth Summit and other Outreach-related events. (3) Maintaining and expanding our diverse web of secondary school teachers, Youth Ambassadors, R2P Advocates, and connections. Each Associate Director is expected to manage a team of officers to assist in their given initiative – a successful track record of leadership, research, and communication skills are highly valued and familiarity with R2P/CCR2P will be an asset.

In celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary, the Canadian Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (CCR2P) will be
launching a nation-wide campaign to reflect upon the past, present and future of Canada's commitment to global humanitarianism. Co-sponsored by the Munk School of Global Affairs, Massey College, the School of Public Policy & Governance, the University College and the Bill Graham Centre for Contemporary International History, this campaign will bring together the U of T community to reflect upon various aspects of Canadian history and Canadian foreign policy, through the lens of human rights. More information on this campaign can be found here.

In view of this ambitious initiative, we are looking for a diverse range of talented individuals to work in one of ten committees, each focused on one of the following projects:
 

1. A Public Debate on R2P & Canadian Foreign Policy 

2. A Film Festival (locations: Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Halifax) 

3. A Photo Exhibit on the Syrian Crisis & Refugees 

4. 150 Canadian Voices on R2P, an online publication that features a diversity of Canadians and their thoughts on R2P and Humanitarianism.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the 2001 ICISS report. What are some key lessons learned for R2P since its birth and how can we move forward with political implementation? How can countries like Canada exercise a leadership role in the implementation of R2P?

1.        R2PLive Analysts

-Reporting to the Managing Directors of R2PLive, selected R2PLive Analysts will be undertaking a multilingual and comprehensive compilation and meta-analysis of a database of R2P-relevant articles from around the world. Proficiency in any of the six UN official languages will be highly valued. 

2.                Research Analysts

- Reporting to the Co-Directors of Undergraduate research, selected research analysts will be undertaking a comprehensive meta-analysis of R2P’s political and normative evolution since the 2005 World Summit Outcome through a country-specific approach. Language skills are valued, as well as previous involvement in other research organizations such as the G8/G20 Research Group.

3. Director of R2P Scholars Network (1)

- Reporting to the Managing Director of Research, this position entails expanding CCR2P’s R2P Scholars Network by identifying key academics and practitioners in the field of R2P. An advanced understanding of the R2P scholarship is required for this position and exceptional organizational skills and communication skills will be valued.

4.      Director of Communication (1)

-          The Director of Communication is responsible for all internal communications at CCR2P, working closely with the other board members for our research and advocacy efforts. He/She will be producing an annual communication strategy for the Centre’s activities and coordinate all graphic materials for promotional purpose. Previous experience and training in communication-related roles in another organization will be valued. Familiarity with Adobe graphic programs, squarespace, as well as background in graphic design will be valued.  Superb command of English and French is required for this position.

 5.     Editor-in-Chief (1)

The Editor-in-Chief will be primarily responsible for the R2P Dispatch, one of CCR2P’s newest initiatives. He or she will work closely with other members of the Editorial Board on R2P Dispatch and other relevant CCR2P projects. Previous publishing and editing experience is an asset, and exceptional writing and editing skills are required.  This position requires superb communication skills and working under pressure within restricted time frames. He or she must also be very familiar with various publication styles and editorial policy, and have sound knowledge around space allocation for text and illustration. Excellent command of both English and French is strongly preferred.

 6.     Social Media Officer (5 positions)

- The Social Media Officer is responsible for creating posts for the Centre’s various social media outlets. This position requires knowledge of Twitter, Facebook, and Hootsuite. Superb command of English and French is required for this position. Other language skills will be valued, as well as previous involvement in journalism and/or social media. 

 

               Opportunities in the Youth Outreach Division

1.                 Curriculum development officer

As a curriculum development officer, you will be tasked with designing concise and visually appealing infographics on various aspects of R2P suitable for Ontario high schools. Experience with research and design and familiarity with the process of making infographics will be valued.

 

2.                Curriculum Translator

As a curriculum translator, you will be tasked with translating the curriculum and other resources we develop into French. Successful candidates must be fully bilingual in both French and English. Passion for genocide prevention education will be valued.

 

3.                Youth Outreach Officer

As a Youth Outreach Officer, you will be tasked with helping to manage and develop our network of Chapters and Youth Ambassadors. In addition, you will assist in coordinating our annual CCR2P Youth Summit in February. Previous experience in outreach and a background in Canadian Schools--specifically the GTA—will be valued.
