Advocacy

  • The Canadian Centre for the Responsibility to Protect has advised the Inter-Parliamentary Union on a resolution calling for acceptance of the R2P principle at the national parliamentary level and beyond. At the 128th Assembly in Quito in March 2013, which brought together nearly 630 Members of Parliaments from 121 countries, delegates adopted a resolution titled “Enforcing the Responsibility to Protect: The Role of Parliament In Safeguarding Civilians’ Lives.” You can find the full resolution here. The full text of the IPU press release on the affair can be found below.   • The Canadian Centre for R2P recently marked the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide in April 2014 through the Rwanda 20 campaign, in partnership with the Bill Graham Centre for the Contemporary International History and the International Relations Program at Trinity College, University of Toronto. This campaign included a full-day conference featuring Dr. Jennifer Welsh, the UN Secretary-General’s Representative on R2P, a film festival, a student panel discussion with Hon. Lloyd Axworthy and Dr. Madeleine Albright, a youth/education outreach, a publication project with the Canadian International Council on “Canadian Voices on R2P,” a social media campaign, and a press conference.   • In the 2014-2015 year, the CCR2P will be engaging in an extensive advocacy campaign to reflect upon the 10th year anniversary of the R2P paragraphs from the 2005 World Summit Outcome.  Please check this webpage again for more updates in the fall of 2014.
